Step Up 2 The Streets (*½ )

We’ve all seen this movie countless times before. Orphaned girl pursues her dream of becoming a great dancer and she’s your typical I-don’t-belong-anywhere kind of girl. And of course she’s pretty too; she has to be, she is the leading lady in this film. Andie (Evigan) refuses to audition for a spot at Maryland School of Arts, but her brother, Tyler (Channing Tatum from the first movie), manages to convince her after a memorable dance-off. Snigger… I can’t use the term dance-off with a straight face.
She forms a street crew with her fellow students after being kicked out of her old crew, the 410. But their crew does not have “street-cred”, they need to film a public “prank” and post it online to win the respect of the other crews. Now the crews start competing in ever more ludicrous ways – a dead fish gets hidden in an opposing crewmembers vents in his home, for instance.
And then it all boils down to the final competition, The Streets, to which Andie’s crew eventually gets accepted. While this is going on the sub-plot, I guess, it gets told with about the same amount of screen time as the main plot, involves Andie getting kicked out of school for consorting with the street crews. Now she has to deliver a kick-ass performance while the headmaster of her school somehow turns up for the Streets competition. Yes, insane, huh?
But that’s exactly what happens, and this is no spoiler, since you will know this will happen the instant the movie starts. Apart from a horrible screenplay, the film does feature some spectacular dance sequences, and for that I give the movie more than the minimum 1-star rating. Go see at your own risk.
